We have a unique program that allows our students to explore different skills, as well as learning the classic English, science, math and social studies. 

We offer classes in cooking, shop and woodworking, hair and esthetics, music, art, fashion, and athletics. Find out more about the different types of classes you can take at BSEC.

BSEC is a flexible high school experience that focuses on meeting students where they are at and providing opportunities for students to learn in ways that work better for them. Standard conventional schools have often failed to provide the necessary learning tools and resources that go beyond the standard learning experience at other public high schools.

For Students

 Anyone between the ages of 14 and 19, not registered at other schools.

Our students are those who have struggled with previous school environments – youth who have not experienced success in conventional learning environments and have had many disruptions in their education.

Registering is a quick process, and we can help any step of the way, just let us know – info@bsec.ab.ca

  • Fill out a registration form 
  • Government-issued identification (License, Health Card, Status Card, etc.) If you don’t have any of the above, come see us and we will work together to get you a government issued ID

Yes, as long as you are not registered at another school, we are happy for you to join us at any point during the school year.

Your experience at BSEC is going to give you more opportunity to figure out what you want from life. The curriculum is flexible to better suit your learning style and has more opportunities to explore your interests in a space that feels motivating, non-judgemental, and safe. At BSEC, we do everything we can to help students leave with their high school diploma. Our program is flexible and we will work with you, and provide the tools and resources you need to help you graduate. While we are here to help you in every way we can, it is up to the student to come to school as much as possible to be able to fulfill the graduation requirements. In nearly 30 years, we have maintained a 100% graduation rate, so we know you can do it.

We understand that you have commitments outside school and, while we encourage your attendance as much as possible, our program is flexible and we will work with you to make sure you are able to keep learning.

At BSEC we provide counseling and support in many specialized areas and our teachers have been working closely with our students to help them succeed. Supporting our students’ mental health is very important to us, and understanding that mental health support is more than just talk therapy.

That’s normal! It is okay to not know what you want to do yet. That is why we place a large focus of our programming on courses that provide career skills – so our students can explore their skills and interests in an environment that allows you to make mistakes and try new things.

Yes! We have counsellors that know and understand the job market and can help you look at options for your future.

Yes! There are both on- and off-campus Work Experience Programs which feature courses to further your personal development, career planning, and employability skills through placements in off-campus and on-campus workstations or work sites.

We have plenty of options for you to choose from including, art, cooking, fashion, hairstyling & cosmetology, improv drama, music, woodworking & painting, and yoga and meditation.

No. You can decide the extent to which your family is involved in your education. We understand and respect that all family relationships are different.

We will work with you to make sure that you can do both – it’s possible. Our teachers and staff understand the challenges of juggling both. We’re here to help you figure it out.

For Families & Caregivers

There is no cost to any BSEC student or their family to attend. All fees are covered by the school to ensure students can come to learn without worrying about financial impacts. We also provide access to free transportation, breakfast and lunch and many other options. Come check us out.
